My girl is 5 already! But I still let her sleep 1 to 1.5 hrs. Even though she wants to play, but still I can tell that she needs that nap; her energy level drops at 5pm. And my girl already sleeps from 9 - 7, only 11 hours per day, hardly enough, sometime she has black eye circle. I just can't make her to sleep more. sigh.作者: s1007416 時間: 2010-3-22 10:19
I agree small child needs their afternoon nap, but I would like to point out that the seminar has suggested the following:
1. Every child is different and they have their own schedule of progression
2. The recommendation is a reference only and does not meant it has to be followed to the dot
3. Parents can assist the child to start reducing the amount of time required for afternoon nap, and at most with no more than 4 hours a day. It did not suggest to stop afternoon nap totally.
Anyway, as most have already pointed out, children in Hong Kong will no longer have the luxury of afternoon nap when they go to primary school. It is only 2.5 to 3 years (3.5 years old to 6 years old) gap anyway. The child knows what s/he wants, and we as parents can tell if we have put the efforts to "listen" to them.作者: s1008283 時間: 2010-3-22 11:00
I understand that the seminar only makes suggestion and parents should decide according to their children situation.
What I have concern is that there is a question on this matter. And that seems to highlight that age, 3.5 years old, without any small print. As busy parent, we often don't read the whole details but the outline / summery only. And I wish no parent would take that "no nap for 3.5 years old" as word on the stone. That's all.
I often see parents are angry at their children's mis-behavior, specially in holiday and dinner time. We parents plan for a fun day, but the children just don't appreciate.
But how many parents would have to time to understand or ask about the reason? Please give your children a break.
Dement, W. C.,& Vaughan, C. (2000). Please don't blame on the course. My son is one of the cases who has no need to take afternoon nap after 3.2 yrs old.
My son is studying in SC K1 pm class. Before 3 yrs old, when he came from school around 5:30 pm, he was so tired and needed to take a nap for one hour. After 3.2 yrs old, he suddenly fulfilled with energy. He has no need to take a nap and he can go to garden to play for more than half an hour. After dinner, he can play chess and study too. He goes to bed at 8:15 pm, falls to sleep before 9pm and wake up by himself at 7-8 am. He is energetic and can concentrate on studying. Even in holiday, after we go outing for half day, he still can not sleep in the afternoon. I am a housewife, I read a lot of books about child caring. They said if the kids can sleep early and sweetly and have good habit of diet, they can have strong and healthy body and good memory. After 3.5 yrs old (especially boys), it is not necessary to have afternoon nap. Even they have, don't sleep more than 2 hrs. It is because early sleeping (not only go to bed) is the most important thing for kids.
